'Call Wendy'

An art quilt that I exhibited a few years ago at the New England MQX show.

This piece is made entirely of fabric and paint. 

It measures 23" X 30".

And it won the Faculty Award! A lovely honor!

White fabric backed with stabilizer. Lines stitched to simulate notebook paper.

Glossy polyester fabric fused to the corners of the 'Photos' to simulate Scotch Tape.

I set up shop along the boardwalk on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA

for a day of art and vending.

Fractured Circles

I was hugely honored when my art quilt, "Fractured Circles"

was accepted into the SAQA Cal/Nev 

combined regional exhibit, "ART QUILTS". 

The show opened in Santa Monica, CA at the historic California Heritage Museum 

on December 8, 2017 and then traveled to 

the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock, CA where the show opened on April 19th. 

I was able to attend both openings are celebrated with an amazing group of artists.

My piece measures 24" X 27" and is constructed with 36 used Tea Bags which were dried and emptied, and then collaged with hand-painted papers and fabrics before adding both machine and hand stitching. 

Three generations. Mom, daughter Katie, and me trekked up to Santa Monica to see the show 

but the museum was CLOSED! Of course I checked the website before we left; 

the calendar showed that the museum was opened that day. 

(Wrong.) Closed for the holidays. 

2 1/2 hours round trip in LA traffic. But we got to see the sign!

At the opening at The Carnegie Arts Center with Deb Cashatt and Kris Sazaki.

A joyful event.

And my quilt sold on opening night. Cheers!

Prayer Flags for a Friend

Prayer Flags for my friend

A dear friend of my was hit hard with some medical complications.

I painted the flowers onto white cloth and then added stitching lines to refine the shapes.

When she returned home from the hospital, these were hanging to lift her spirits.

They now hang in her amazing art studio.

I've been stitching across America again. 

I was in Cleveland for a week with Quilting Arts TV. 
My 3 segments will air next spring. More to follow.

Now I'm in New York for Quilters Take Manhattan. 

I'm catching up with great friends and learning new things. 

Then off to Connecticut to sew with Mom, 
and from there to Colorado Springs to stitch with Liz Kettle. 

I'll be teaching at The Thread Lab: Wonderfil Threaducation Center

Welcome to Day 7 of the 

Batiks Gone Retro Blog Hop 

featuring the amazing fabric line by Tamarinis for Island Batik.

 Tammy Silvers is the quilter and fabric designer behind Tamarinis.

The collection includes a variety of whimsical and delightful, mid-century inspired prints.

I stitched a tote bag for the introduction of Tammy's fabric line at Spring Quilt Market. I used a variety of this incredible fabric line without a pattern since I typically create as I go. 
I begin laying out fabric, cutting and stitching until a shape begins to form. 

                                 

In addition to the tote bag, I played with more fabrics to 
create 2 wall pieces with more vintage trailers in mind. 

I love Airstream trailers and had fun using my designs with Tammy's fabric. 

My technique is spontaneous and intuitive. I use MistyFuse (http://www.mistyfuse.com) to add a thin fusible layer to the back of my fabrics and then begin cutting shapes without a pattern. These are then ironed onto a background fabric.

 My favorite step is using free-motion stitching with black thread to add detail.

 My lines are quick and sketchy, random and imprecise. 

What a treat it was for me to experiment and play with this inspiring fabric line!

"Purple Joins a Flock of Orange"

My friend Jamie Fingal, who has her art studio a mile up the street from mine in Orange, California, is soon to release another fabric line which she has designed for RJR fabrics. This extensive line will debut at Spring Market in St. Louis later this month. Referred to as a super blender line, these 'tone-on-tone' fabrics, printed in Jamie's signature riot of bold color, 

will be prominently displayed in the RJR booth.

I was invited by Jamie to create an 18" x 18" sample quilt using fabrics I selected from her new line. It was a difficult job. There are over 80 choices!

I have been lucky enough to see Jamie's extensive journal collection that she fills daily with drawings in her unique and whimsical style. It was from these sketchbooks that RJR narrowed her designs down until 11 were selected, a difficult task as her collection of images is so vast. These 11 drawings were each printed in several color-ways, amounting to the full collection of 83 prints! 

Eighteen of Jamie's new fabrics have been incorporated into my sample quilt, 

allowing for a blend of rich color and a subtle variety of hues.

  

    

One proud purple bird is welcomed into a flock of orange and yellow.

I added a bit of fun to the back side. One more orange bird heading home to the flock.

This wraps up our blog hop for Jamie's new incredible fabric line, 'hopscotch' by RJR fabrics.
